About Matala Crete Greece

Matala has a unique position between the chalk rocks. Lots of caves give a characteristic look at this romantic village. In the sixties, Matala was the famous meeting point of the hippies. Nowadays the caves can be visited only during the day. The caves are very impressive and a must to visit.

There are historical places you can visit in the neighborhood e.g. Festos but also quiet traditional villages and beaches like e.g. Agia Galini or Komos and more.

The climate of Matala (south Crete) is maybe the best of Greece. In the summer warm and in the winter mild. The inhabitants of Matala are very hospital. South of Matala there is a huge rock formation that offers a panoramic view of the Messara Bay.

The tourist shops of Matala are very famous for their products variety. The picturesque local taverns on the beach of Matala are ideal for romantic and care-free nights. Taste the local wine and raki with a traditional meal or fresh fish from the Libyan sea.

Matala is also an ideal starting point for outings and excursions to the archaeological sites but you can also do horse riding, carting, scuba diving and playing football or basketball.

Matala is about 70 km distance from Heraklion city and you can drive through here in about 1 hour by bus, taxi or your own car.
